Meet Tyra

TYRA THOMAS-WALKER

Tyra Thomas-Walker, a dedicated mother, JCPS educator, JCTA Secretary, and co-chair of the Kentucky Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, faced early challenges as the child of a teenage mother. Raised by her grandparents, Tyra made a pivotal choice to leave public education, marry at 18, and move to Germany, where she started a family. Returning to Louisville during her first pregnancy, she seized the opportunity to work and earn her GED. Driven by a lifelong commitment to education, Tyra pursued college while juggling full-time work and single-handedly raising two children. Breaking barriers, she became the first in her immediate family to earn a Bachelors in Business Administration, followed by a Masters in Business Administration. Later, she attained a Masters in Arts in teaching, navigating the challenges of multiple jobs and single parenthood. Today, Tyra Thomas-Walker is currently raising her three biological children along with her five nieces and nephew since the passing of her sister and mother. She is grounded in family values, and taking care of her responsibilities as the matriarch of her family. She has stated that she would not do it any other way and would do it all over again. Beyond her academic achievements and family values, Tyra is a passionate social justice activist, advocating in the community and contributing to positive change.

Issues & Plans

My name is Tyra Thomas-Walker, and I am running for Louisville Metro City Council in District 24. As a long time Special Education Teacher and public servant, I know that we need better policy to improve the lives for all Kentuckians, and those in District 24. As your Metro City Council Member, I will draft policies that will reduce crime in our neighborhoods, and those related to the proliferation of fentanyl on our streets. Part of reducing violent crime is by providing resources for public education. When our students, teachers, and school staff are well-resourced, not only will crime plummet, but our young people will thrive and we will bring in additional well qualified teachers. I will continue the work that has been started with smart zoning and infrastructure to ensure that district 24 remains
a flourishing community while creating strong infrastructure that focuses on the needs of the Hillview, Highview, and FernCreek. Let’s build
a healthier and safer Hillview, Highview, and Fern Creek together.

EDUCATION

Tyra Thomas-Walker, a proud product of Moore High School, Louisville's public school education, and longtime resident of Hillview/Okolona who cherishes her experience and wouldn't alter a thing. With six children as JCPS graduates, three who are enrolled and attend a college/university, and others thriving
as working citizens, she emphasizes the value of education provided by Jefferson County Public Schools. Tyra actively endorses public education, recognizing its adaptability to the evolving public school landscape, especially amidst the challenges of the 2020-2021 pandemic. She applauds JCPS for addressing trauma, implementing the Racial Equity Policy, and striving to create an inclusive curriculum that fosters a sense of belonging for every child.

HEALTHCARE

Tyra Thomas-Walker is deeply invested in addressing the healthcare crisis,
with a particular focus on mental health issues. To effectively tackle homelessness and drug addiction, it is crucial to prioritize and advocate for
comprehensive healthcare services. By ensuring that individuals with mental health challenges receive the support they need, we can also provide crucial assistance for those struggling with addiction. Championing effective healthcare is the first step towards meaningful progress in these interconnected issues.
